WORKING FOR CAMPUS MEDIA
WORKING FOR CAMPUS MEDIA
Cover 2 Cover Magazine feels like a first-born child. It was birthed out of a need to create and it has grown into something I am so proud of. This fall, we produced our third issue and it was a project that started before school began.
After learning a lot of lessons last year about deadlines, planning and seeing the bigger picture. Our Editor In Chief, Essence Wiley, and I decided to begin preparing for this issue in late July. This way, when the semester picked up our growing creative team was already well-connected and functioning as a team. Out of the other two issues we produced, this one went the smoothest by far. Our preparation and dedication to improvement has carried us to new heights.
We printed 500 copies of our magazine and after a day we couldn’t find any copies left on campus. Our followers on Instagram grew by nearly two hundred people when we started our two-week long magazine rollout and our engagement is the highest it has ever been.
For me, I came into this new semester thinking about how I could do better as Chief Creative Officer.
As a leader, I wanted to coordinate meetings for our team better and ensure that everyone felt involved in the creative process. In addition, I wanted to streamline processes and organize our internal communication. So, the first thing I did was organize our Google Drive system to include resources, a guidebook, and meeting notes for our teams. This semester I wanted to make sure that internal communication ran smoothly and that team members had clear expectations and deliverables. Last year, I made a lot of assumptions about what people knew and decided that this year I would rather over communicate than to leave things unsaid.
Creatively, I wanted to develop C2C’s brand. Establishing fonts, style guides, and any other visual elements. I wanted our website, social media platforms, and printed work to look cohesive. For C2C to be recognizable beyond our logo. In addition, I wanted our printed magazine to be professional. That meant exposing my team to works like Essence, Dazed, ID, and New York Magazine. I believe that as a result of this, our magazine looked better than it ever has.
Last spring, with our first printed issue, our cover was a little grainy. This year, I learned about photo editing in Photoshop and the importance of ensuring the PPI was never below 200. I emphasized readability and spacing for our printed designs. Overall, I learned that as a creative leader for our magazine every decision had to be done with intention. It isn’t just art for art’s sake but art that enhances written communication.
As I look to the future of my final semester at Howard University, I think about the work I will leave behind. I want to make sure that there is a clean transfer of power and principle at C2C. So, my final semester will be spent ensuring that my successor is prepared to lead our teams even better than I did. I can’t wait to see what we accomplish in 2024!
MY WORKS
‘IN HER OWN WORDS’ LAYOUT
This story was a Q&A with HUSA’s first transgender VP, Murphy Jones. Entitled ‘In Her Own Words', it was a story that kept her at the forefront so I wanted to ensure the design did the same. I wanted this layout to be as open as Murphy was in her interview but to still feel full. So I made the layout minimal in its design elements so that the reader could focus on the type.I chose that shade of pink using the droplet tool in InDesign to pick a color from the flowers in the photos and wanted to use it to highlight pull out quotes. The pullout quotes I chose would include moments that I felt were pivotal in the story and would draw the reader in.
HOMECOMING CONCERT 2023 LAYOUT
I had a lot of fun doing this layout! I looked through hundreds of photos pulling photos that I felt would capture the experience that is Howard University Homecoming. On some of the images I added a glowy grain to them to add to that joyous feeling in the imagery. Then, I added some painted shadows using the issue's color palette to add to its scrapbook look. I wanted it to feel like a collage of moments that will soon be distant memories. The dilemma was that I originally designed it to be long enough for one page with a large headline below it and the text on the page adjacent to it. However, after looking at a lot of our other designs I decided I wanted to break up my design in a way that was different from a lot of the other two page designs. I was happy with this layout, although my third paragraph is misaligned from the other three.
EVOLUTION OF HIP HOP: FASHION SHOW IN REVIEW
This was probably the most challenging layout I designed in this magazine. For one, I wasn’t supposed to design the page but with one of our designers unable to complete their design I had to step up and complete it. Then, because the photos for this story were taken on film, it had a quick design turnaround time. Finally, I realized that the photos were too small for the layout I had in mind. So, I went into Photoshop and resized the image to help retain the quality of the image as it was stretched beyond its initial size. However, the image was still a bit grainy in its background. So, I went back into Photoshop and made the background darker and near black so that the subject would stand out against the contrast and the graininess in the background was not visible. This is my favorite layout because I was really proud of my determination to problem solve.
C2C WEBSITE DESIGN
Over the summer I learned a lot about web design. I am still not where I want to be but when I came back to Howard in the fall, I decided to make some design changes. For one, I changed our font to be the same as our Instagram fonts for brand recognition. Then, I changed how I was uploading articles to make my job of uploading articles weekly a little bit easier. Most importantly, I wanted to design a separate page for our latest issue. I did design a separate page with our last issue, but I wanted this one to feel like they were reading through the magazine digitally. I also wanted to be sure I included pages for our photo essays which perform highest on our social media. My hope next semester is to use some of my newly learned coding skills to enhance the interactivity on our homepage.
GRAPHICS FOR SOCIAL MEDIA
When our photography team isn’t able to capture photos, I design graphics for our stories. This semester, I tried to use common design elements such as glowing effects, duotone, repetition, and gradients throughout our designs. I also made sure to use the same fonts and colors from our brand package to, once again, aid in our brand recognition. I was really proud of these designs because they challenged me to consider ways of ensuring that they were similar but didn’t look like they were copy and pasted.
